Eastern Railway was formed on
Stores Department as a separate department made its
beginning in the year 1857 and was headed by General Stores Keeper (GSK). First
GSK was Mr. T. F. Campbell. There after, the designation was changed to
Principal Store Keeper (1863-1866), then to Chief Store Keeper (1866 – 1886)
and finally to Controller of Stores. The department is presently headed by
At present, the department is having 72 officers, 5,000
staff and making purchases worth Rs. 500 Crores and selling scrap worth Rs.
200 Crores every year. Approximately, 15,000 items are stocked at various
depots, viz., Liluah,
The oldest Railway Printing press established in the year
1855 catering to the needs of Tickets, forms and stationery is also a part of
Stores Department.
